Open Access Resources for Librarians with IAL (KL-OARL)

Note that this course and ‘Open Access Resources for Academics’ are parallel workshops intended to demonstrate the importance and advantages of complimentary use of open access and institutional repositories to both communities. Institutions requesting this as an in-house course may like to consider running Open Access Resources for Academics on the preceding or following day.

Objectives

The course will ensure that academic librarians understand the significance of the open access movement and the wide range of free resources opening up to them. It will reinforce the importance of repositories – both as a source of scholarly literature and as a research tool for promoting material published by their academic colleagues. The emphasis in this course will be on locating       e-resources in repositories and open access journals and the role of the library in supporting academic colleagues using the local repository

Outcomes

At the end of the course, participants will have:

  • Considered the peer review process and its relationship with open access
  • Understand Open Access in all its forms, including open access journals and institutional / subject repositories
  • Understand the uses to which institutional repositories can be put and the kinds of material that can be deposited
  • Understand the role of research councils
  • Explored search tools for libraries
  • Looked at the article deposit process
  • Considered the library’s role in supporting scholars through deposit, search, and research activity reporting
