The Basics of Knowledge Management & Innovation

Objectives

This course will provide an overview of the field of Innovation and Knowledge Management (I&KM) and introduce participants to the value of applying Innovation and Knowledge Management procedures in an organisation. It will outline the interrelationship, as well as the differences between KM, Information Management, and Records Management. It will specifically demonstrate how the application of I&KM will enhance productivity, service delivery, knowledge exchange, knowledge leveraging and innovative capabilities in organisations. Participants will be introduced to the various processes and strategies that can be used to turn an organisation’s intellectual and knowledge assets into greater value.

Outcomes

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Understand the principles and environments of Innovation and Knowledge Management
  • Discern which Innovation and KM processes could best be applied to their work situation
  • Understand how to create an innovation and KM culture and derive strategic advantage from Innovation and KM procedures
  • Participate in developing a basic Innovation and  KM strategy and implementation plan for an organisation
  • Assess innovation capabilities, leverage individual creativity and logical thinking in an organisation
  • Know how to implement the basic KM practices
  • Understand the roles  and skills for knowledge workers and KM champions
  • Identify Innovation and Knowledge Management Enablers
  • Implement the basic steps to set up a collaborative and knowledge networking environment, e.g. Communities of Practice
  • Participate in a knowledge and information needs assessment and audit
  • Understand the role of taxonomies, ontologies, and create a basic knowledge map
  • Discern which Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), social media, etc. best apply to Innovation and  Knowledge Management practices
  • Understand the role of change management in innovation and knowledge management
